My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, warrior cloth as her brother: A fighter by nature, and a maverick when it comes to the traditional role of Chosen females, there is no place for her on the Far Side… and no role for her on the front lines of the war, either.
When she suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.
As the two find so much more than an erotic connection, the human and vampire worlds collide … just as a centuries old score catches up with Payne and puts both her love and her life in deadly jeopardy.
This is the story of Payne and Manuel Manello, MD. But its also V and Jane’s story continued. For as many pages as Payne and Manny got, V got as much if not more. It’s like Ward didn’t like the way V’s story ended, and decided to rewrite it, and included another story so people wouldn’t get pissed.
Don’t get me wrong, Ward did a much better job this time around with V’s story and she didn’t dissapoint with Payne’s story (although Payne turned into a completely different female than she’s been portrayed up to now).
We also get some backstory on Qhuinn, which is always a good thing. We find out what he saw in the Fade and I didn’t see that coming at all…
I would have given this novel 4 stars, but I felt the main focus of the story was not on Payne and Manny and I really hate when authors do that. If the story is about a specific couple, then that’s what the story should be about. If you feel like there is more to add about another couple, come out with a short novella about them and add it to the back of the book.
Would I recommend this book? Yes, to all the hardcore V lovers. Plus, Manny and V together are awesome and I found myself laughing at some of their interactions. And V and Butch get me every. single. time.
